Each year the Material Handling Society awards scholarships annually to college students pursuing studies in material handling related fields. Our annual MHSNJ Golf Classic each June raises over $7,000 annually to be awarded to students from both Rutgers University and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
In 1982, Chuck Kroner attended a golf tournament hosted by the New York City Chapter of IMMS, held at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Bloomfield. Feeling our chapter should be able to hold such an event, he organized and ran the first of 29 annual golf tournaments by the New Jersey society in 1983, and for the next 25 years ran the event, finally turning the job over to Don Cronin of Alternative Technologies. In 1992, Chuck asked the participants to join him in turning our annual "fun" event into a fund-raising affair, and thus began the MHSNJ College Scholarship program. The first year we raised $675, and with the help of the Board who promised to match what we did with general funds, the following year we awarded our first grant of $1,300 to Bloomfield College, which at that time had a curriculum in material management. By 2011, the total raised by the golf outing and awarded to colleges reached $74,000. We have established a great relationship with Rutgers University Engineering, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology which have become the principal beneficiaries of our awards.
